Our team of over 20 structural/civil engineers and documenters have extensive international and local experience in a huge range of projects ensuring we have the expertise and knowledge for your project. We operate offices in Melbourne and Adelaide and provide our services to projects across all Australian states and major cities.

Our designs are captured on comprehensive documentation and industry leading, data rich BIM modelling prepared in Autodesk Revit. We don’t send design work to remote places for processing. All of our work is done locally, with the nominated project leader being the person who oversees the design, attends meetings and ultimately manages project risk.
Daniel Yap
Director
Daniel is a founding Director of Matter, leading the technical development and mentoring of staff and engineering systems to achieve superior outcomes on some of the most complex institutional and mixed-use developments in Australia. Well versed in the design of all major structural materials and he has delivered projects including multi-storey apartment buildings, commercial offices, retail complexes, industrial / warehouse buildings, education developments, and emergency / health facilities as well as refurbishments/alterations to existing structures. Above all, Daniel strives to make every project an enjoyable experience. He takes great satisfaction in contributing pro-actively to the success of a building project, and enjoys seeing his projects come to life from concept to completion, from design and through to construction. Daniel is a Chartered Professional Engineer and holds a bachelor degree in civil engineering as well as a bachelor degree in finance.
Elliot Smith
Director
As a founding Director of Matter, Elliot leads by leveraging the skills of the Matter team to deliver outstanding results for those who partner with Matter. He enjoys direct involvement in all of his projects by lending his expertise and knowledge from schematic design through to construction stage servicing. Elliot’s expertise includes the efficient design of commercial and residential structures. His skills and outcome-driven approach are regularly sought-after by developers, builders and architects. He has successfully delivered structural designs for significant projects throughout the UK and Australia. These include major high-rise towers in Melbourne such as 263 William Street and 888 Collins Street, and government buildings throughout Victoria, such as Morwell Government Hub. Elliot is a Chartered Professional Engineer and holds a masters degree in civil engineering.
John Osmond
Associate Director
John joined Matter in 2020, bringing over a decade of experience in both construction and consulting structural engineering, in the UK and Australia. John is an excellent communicator and problem solver, making him ‘first-choice’ for many of our clients. He has vast experience in the design of concrete (reinforced, precast and post-tensioned), steel, masonry, timber and retention systems for various engineered structural systems to resist wind and earthquake loads. He leads Matter’s most complex projects, from commercial office towers to complex refurbishments of existing heritage buildings. John is passionate about how we, as engineers, can lead the way to a net-zero building industry. He has pioneered methods to assess and report the quantity of embodied carbon in our designs, and believes that both efficient structural design and re-using or extending existing buildings offer significant carbon and cost savings for our industry. John is a Chartered Professional Engineer and holds a masters degree in Civil Engineering.
Wahid Elgohary
Associate
Wahid joined Matter Consulting in 2019, bringing professional experience in the design of many types of buildings; including residential and commercial high-rise towers in Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok. Wahid’s enthusiasm for engineering for achieving superior results for our clients has earned him a rapid progression to Associate within a short amount of time. His success has led to him recently taking on the new role leading the company’s South Australia operations. Wahid values sustainable and creative designs. Through the use of advanced element analysis packages as well as being at the forefront of adopting and implementing new technologies in the market. Wahid delivers competent structural designs tailored for each design situation without compromising on the aesthetic architectural design nor the simplicity of construction. Wahid has a clear understanding of other professional disciplines involved in delivering projects, and he enjoys working with the project team on delivering well-thought and coordinated projects to ensure the best overall value of investment by our clients. Wahid is a Chartered Professional Engineer and holds a masters degree in Civil Engineering.
Steve Forbes
BIM and Qaulity Assurance Manager
Steve joined Matter in 2017 developing and implementing Matter’s BIM and QA systems. He brings over 20 years of professional drafting experience, 12 of which being devoted to BIM and documenting with Revit. Having worked on a wide variety of landmark projects over the years, Steve helped deliver projects such as the Women's and Children's Hospital, Melbourne and Festival City Mall, Dubai using BIM while still at its infancy. Having helped change the Melbourne skyline working on many tower projects throughout the city, he has vast experience with BIM and the construction industry. Steve knows what it takes to start and see a project through to completion. Given an early opportunity to learn and document with Revit has given Steve an unparalleled knowledge base of his craft. Steve continues to leverage and develop cutting edge innovations as well as mentoring and guiding staff under his supervision.
Drew Thomson
BIM and Innovation Manager
Drew joined Matter in 2018 as our BIM and Innovation Manager.He brings over 20 years of professional drafting experience, with 11 years full time Revit experience as a senior BIM modeler and BIM manager. His technical knowledge and skills have been cultivated through senior and lead roles on projects in Australia, London and Dubai across residential, commercial, health and landmark projects. Working closely with some talented peers throughout his career and becoming an early adopter of Revit has allowed for continual professional and technical growth. Having managed and mentored a BIM drafting team as well as exploring BIM collaborations with tier 1 contractors and consultancies, he has a solid technical and goal orientated approach to his work. Drew’s passion for innovation in the BIM space has resulted in our models being more data-rich and sophisticated than our competitors. Yet still, he believes we have merely touched the sides on what is possible with BIM and automation.
